Serpentine Studios
Community Generation is direct and unique way of relating. Because it focusses on helping people to connect with each other, building a community centres on building space for people to connect and exchange.
Below is how we grew Serpentine’s youth community.

Facilitating connections
The programme allowed me to create quickly but also freely. I feel like I pushed and really expressed myself – there aren’t enough opportunities like that

Serpentine is one of London’s leading contemporary art galleries, but not amongst young people. The team wanted to connect to young artist and art enthusiasts in a meaningful and impactful way.
Pocc brought us on board, along with Break Comms, to help develop the new idea: Serpentine Studios - a space that took the shape of a programme for young and exciting artists to collaborate with Serpentine. The result was a new way of engaging with Serpentine’s curations, connecting with each other, and producing as artists.
Upholding the space
Visually, Serpentine Studios created a collaborative space between young people and the brand by offering a new visual identity for the group. This was designed to be easily adapted by the collective and empower them to create for themselves.
The programme ended rounded off with Sepentine hosting a celebratory event at the pavillion, and young artists creating their own exhibition.
Today, Serpentine continues to work with London’s youth community and maintains its position as a valuable, collaborative and relevant asset in young people’s worlds.
Fuelling conversations
My experience made friends of mine head down to the gallery to see the exhibition and find out more.
It’s not just the members of Serpentine Studios who gain things from projects like this

Through the 6-weeks programme, young artists received weekly creative mentorship, a new portfolio of work, a network and exposure to iconic artists like photographer, James Barnor.
They were able to engage consistently with interact deeply with art and an institute of the contemporary art world.
From this, the young collective developed a trusting relationship with Serpentine and more young people visited the gallery to take advantage of its extensive range of free exhibitions.
